I present a new mechanism whereby spatially varying order in a thin liquid crystal film, induced by chemical or topographic patterning on a substrate, can lead to spontaneous topography on an opposing free interface. Analytical and numerical results will be shown to elucidate this mechanism, together with recent experimental evidence and connections to other free interface problems in Liquid Crystals.
