Application of complex dynamic models to the simulation of urban phenomena

Urban areas are dynamic systems where many complex, interdependent phenomena occur. The use of mathematical approaches to model and simulate these phenomena was introduced to urban research in the 1950s and gained a new breath in the mid 1980s with the advent of personal computers and GIS. The research in this field is intense and urban researchers can now use a wide handset of modeling tools based on concepts such as cellular automata, agent-base models, genetic and machine learning algorithms, and swarm intelligence. This talk will present an overview and new developments on the use of some of these concepts to simulate the evolution of urban areas.
