Magnetic and electronic interface phenomena in complex oxides

The potential of complex oxide materials for device applications stems from their wide range of functional properties, including magnetism, ferroelectricity, and charge transport effects, a consequence of strong electron-electron and electron-phonon correlations which intimately link charge, spin and lattice distortions. In this talk, I will present recent experimental work on the electronic and magnetic interfacial properties of epitaxial Co3O4 ultrathin films and Fe3O4/BaTiO3 and La1−xSrxMnO3/PZT epitaxial heterostructures, which are engineered to exhibit unusually strong magneto-elastic and magneto-electric effects, respectively. These examples demonstrate that the ability to fabricate hybrid structures from the bottom-up is tremendously promising for both applications and for the study of new physical phenomena.
