CFTC: Mapping the Fold: New Algorithm Guides Smarter 3D Structures from Flat Sheets
Testing folding patterns by trial and error is slow, and exploring every possible route quickly becomes computationally overwhelming. Researchers at CFTC have developed a new graph-based method that treats folding as a network of possibilities, revealing the hidden pathways by which 2D templates become 3D structures. By mapping not only successful folding routes but also potential dead ends and “misfolds”, the approach can help designers identify problems before fabrication, choose more reliable folding strategies, and reduce the complexity of automated manufacturing. From deployable satellites and soft robots to biomedical devices and programmable materials, this work provides a new design tool for the next generation of compact, reconfigurable technologies.
