The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) is one of the largest and most promising projects in Astronomy. It is an interferometer made by thousands of receivers, that will be located in two continents: along 9 countries (south) of Africa, Australia and New Zealand. SKA will operate in the meter to centimeter range, the sensitivity will be about 50 times that of the existing interferometers. The motivation to build this radio telescope, including the key science projects will be discussed, as well as the impact that this large-scale structure will have in areas as diverse as energy, or processing and transmission of information. The Portuguese efforts in the framework of SKA will be presented, in particular those related to the testing-site at Moura.
