Despite over 3 decades of activity, the experimental search for the missing matter of the Universe, in which the best identification  remains "weakly interacting massive particle" (or WIMP), continues to be a forefront activity of modern physics research. Recently, 3 experiments to directly detect its interaction with earth-based detectors have identified several regions of possible WIMP existence (contested however by other experiments). I will briefly describe the current experimental situation, and elaborate on a Portuguese -- SIMPLE -- discrediting of the claims.
