Freedom and Coercion in Joint Effort Games

The prevalence of costly punishment in joint enterprises is a puzzling feature of human cooperation. We will show that it is more likely to evolve in voluntary games than in compulsory games, using methods from the theory of evolutionary games in finite populations.
